Open rate gets all the attention, but it's one of the least useful metrics in your email marketing toolkit on its own. If you want your email program to actually grow revenue not just look good on a screenshot here's what to track instead.
Open rates are easy to report and easy to misread. With privacy features like Apple's Mail Privacy Protection, many “opens” are now triggered automatically rather than by an actual human reading your email which means open rate alone can be misleading.
That doesn't make open rate useless it's still helpful for testing subject lines over time but it shouldn't be the headline metric you report to leadership or use to judge a campaign's success.
A more complete picture of email performance includes:
Click-through rate (CTR) the percentage of recipients who clicked a link, showing real engagement.
Conversion rate the percentage who completed your goal action (purchase, signup, donation) after clicking.
Revenue per email total revenue attributed to a campaign divided by emails sent the clearest ROI signal you have.
List growth vs. churn are you growing your list faster than people unsubscribe or bounce?
Deliverability & spam complaints if these creep up, every other metric suffers.
The same email sent to your entire list will almost always underperform a version tailored to specific segments new subscribers, repeat customers, lapsed customers, high-value clients, and so on.
Segmenting by purchase history, engagement level, or on-site behavior (especially when your email platform is connected to your website analytics) lets you send fewer, more relevant emails which tends to improve every metric above at once, including unsubscribe rates.
The real value of email analytics isn't the report itself it's what you do with it. Which subject lines style consistently outperforms? Which segment responds best to discounts versus educational content? What time of day or day of week gets the best engagement for your audience specifically?
When we build marketing dashboards for clients, email performance sits alongside website analytics and sales data so you can see not just whether someone opened an email, but what they did after they clicked.
We'll connect your email platform data to your website and sales analytics so you can see the full customer journey and what to send next.
